Dinner at Shirley's: Flavours & Stories of South Africa

Shirley grew up in South Africa during a time of enormous change. She spent her childhood in apartheid-era South Africa and witnessed the country's transition to democracy.

The youngest of five girls, Shirley was a rebellious child who loved questioning authority. She eventually built a career in technology before following her long-held dream of moving to Europe. First came Brussels, then Copenhagen, where she's now happily settled in a beautiful apartment overlooking Assistens Kirkegård.

For this SILVERS dinner, Shirley is inviting you into her Nørrebro home for a taste of South Africa, with traditional food and stories from the country where she grew up.

On the menu is bobotie, a South African dish of spiced minced meat with Cape Malay influences, followed by what Shirley calls her “kick-ass dessert” – Cape brandy pudding, made with dates and walnuts and served with a warm brandy sauce.

But the conversation won't stop at South Africa!

Shirley's life has taken her across continents, through both the places she's lived and her love of travel. She's endlessly curious about people, cultures, food and the different ways we choose to live. An avid reader, enthusiastic traveller and someone who can't quite imagine retirement, she's collected plenty of stories and perspectives along the way.

For Shirley, the best evenings are about exchanging experiences rather than simply telling her own stories. She loves hearing how other people see the world, what they've learnt, and what matters to them.
