Silvers Dinners: A Taste of Guyana with Gillian

Born in Guyana and now living in Aarhus, Gillian brings both her South American roots and 40+ years of experience across continents to the dinner table.
Guyana is known as a melting pot of cultures - Indigenous, Indian, African, Chinese, and European - and its food reflects this blend. Gillian grew up learning to cook dishes across traditions, from curries and noodles to pepper pot, the beloved cassava stew of her Indigenous heritage.
At this dinner, she pairs a Guyanese-inspired meal with stories from her life: moving to Denmark at 19, building a career in teaching and academia, and navigating challenges with resilience and curiosity. Gillian is a natural storyteller who loves good conversation, food, and connection.
About Gillian
Gillian has covered many areas in her life: from chemical engineering studies and teaching, to volunteering, women’s health advocacy, and now writing. She is a cancer survivor, a member of her church, and someone deeply curious about philosophy, politics, and the world. Warm and welcoming, Gillian has always loved hosting - once dreaming of opening a café to share Caribbean hospitality.
